The FormanWatkins Diversity Pathway Program, in partnership with the Bob Owens Pre-Law Center and the Reuben V. Anderson Pre-Law Scholars Program, is designed for students aspiring to build a career in law. This stipend program seeks to increase the diversity of law school applicants and follow the students through their law school journey and into careers in the legal profession. Committed to fostering diversity in the legal profession, particularly in civil defense, we strive to create an inclusive environment that supports and empowers aspiring students from all backgrounds.

Previous participants have gone on to attend law school at Harvard University | George Washington University | Suffolk University | Vermont University | University of Alabama | Washburn University | Drake University.

The Pre-Law Program

The pre-law program is the first phase of the FormanWatkins Diversity Pathway Program.  This program introduces students to the law school experience, exposes them to the innerworkings of a litigation firm, and provides insight on building a strong law school application.

Program participants engage in the following activities:

  • Seminars on civil litigation, legal writing & researching, case briefing, outlining, and writing the law school exam
  • Mock law school lecture
  • Attorney shadowing opportunities during meetings, court appearances and/or depositions
  • Networking and panel discussions with practicing attorneys and current law students
  • Mentorship during and after the program

Pre-law Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a junior or senior at Jackson State University or Tougaloo College with a minimum GPA of 3.5

The Law School Program

Once students complete the pre-law program, they will transition to the second phase, the law school program. This phase follows students through law school and offers a host of professional development workshops geared towards preparing students for their legal career upon graduation. The law school program includes:

  • A "bootcamp" program to prepare participants on what to expect during their first year of law school, including a panel discussion with firm Associates and a mock law school lecture
  • Abbreviated "mini clerkships" giving a glimpse of the firm's clerkship program and fostering mentor relationships with firm attorneys
  • Opportunity to participate in summer clerkship program

Law School Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Completion of the pre-law program
  • Currently enrolled in law school
