Update on the Veterans’ Legal Clinic in New Jersey
On November 17, 2018, New Jersey partners Tom Toman and Nicole Diesa were among the 18+ Monmouth Bar Association ("MBA") attorneys who volunteered at the Monmouth County Veterans Information and Resources Clinic held at Monmouth University and provided free consultations to Veterans on various legal topics. Planning for the event began in the summer when the Bar Association President gave Mr. Toman authority to organize the clinic on behalf of the MBA. Ultimately, representatives from the VA, Monmouth County Veterans Services, Monmouth County Clerk, Monmouth Sheriff's office, NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, SOLDIER ON, and NJ Department of Consumer Affairs were contacted, and each agreed to participate in the Clinic and provide additional services for the Veterans.
Thanks to the Clinic's success, a second Veterans event by the Monmouth Bar Association is in the works and is expected to be held in Spring or Summer, 2019. Planning is also in progress for an expanded program that would include a joint Ocean County/Monmouth County Bar Association Clinic, tentatively planned to be held at a local VA clinic (more information on location, date, and time will be provided once finalized). In light of these programs, the President of the MBA has indicated that he intends to create a permanent Veterans Assistance Committee.
